Layers of Fear is far from the best-looking VR horror game, and it’s disappointing that such a loved game didn’t get a little more refinement when it comes to graphics. The lighting effects are also pretty disappointing overall. The textures are muddier in the VR version than they are in the original game. Most notably are the graphics, which is a significant hit for a game that relies on immersion. While the VR version is certainly spookier than the flat version, it does fall short in just a few areas. It’s easily the scariest version of Layers of Fear. Some moments can be truly terrifying due to the immersive nature of VR and the game’s storytelling. The dizzying scares and shifting rooms work great with the headset on. The VR format almost makes this the definitive version of Layers of Fear. I won’t say that the game isn’t scary, but the sound of shattering glass and books flying off of shelves will only scare the players so many times before they wear out. There isn’t enough tension, and instead, the game is scare after scare from start to finish.
It’s a solid horror game, but it fails to stand amongst the greats when it comes to terrifying the player. Layers of Fear does rely just a bit too much on jumpscares though.

This isn’t an issue in Layers of Fear VR. Players can constantly focus on the moment, taking in the scares and the plot to their full extent. Backtracking often plagues these kinds of games and is more annoying than it is scary. In most horror games that involve exploring a house, the tension is often broken by how easy it is to get lost. It works great as a horror mechanic, but it’s even better from a gameplay perspective. It can be a door that wasn’t there before or something a bit more spooky. Players will walk into a room, interact with something, turn around, and everything is suddenly different. The rooms in the house are constantly changing. Discovering the origins of the house and painter is a genuinely compelling experience that will keep players moving forward.Īnother thing that will force players to go forward is the way that the house is constantly changing around the players. Despite this, the story and scares do more than enough to carry the experience. Players can’t do more than travel throughout the house and interact with the objects the occupy it. The gameplay basically boils down to being a walking simulator. As they go through this house, the player will learn about the painter’s past and the awful things that happened in the house. The painter is exploring a spooky house in search of inspiration for his magnum opus.
Players will step into the shoes of a deranged painter.
Layers of Fear VR is an experience that is completely driven by its story. If you caught all of the puns that I threw into that paragraph, please know that I am not sorry. Layers of Fear VR takes the iconic game and gives it a new perspective that adds tons of layers to the experience. It’s by no means a masterpiece, but its intriguing story and non-stop scares have painted Layers of Fear into the minds of those who have played it.
